The Chronos 4K12 high-speed camera streamlines the process of recording and playing back slow-motion videos by integrating a cutting-edge high-speed image sensor and an intuitive touchscreen display within a portable and versatile camera body.

This article and the accompanying videos showcase the rapid recording, reviewing, and saving of footage to the camera's internal 1 TB solid-state drive.

The scene above was captured at 4096 x 2160 (4K) at 1,368 frames per second, 8 bits per pixel (16.7 million colors), and ISO 400, using a 24mm f/1.5 lens. It was illuminated by a single Godox SL100D LED light approximately 1m/3ft away from the subject.

For optimal results in high-speed videography, ample lighting of the subject is crucial. Generally, higher capture frame rates demand increased lighting.

Below, a similar subject is recorded, reviewed, and saved at 1920 x 1080 (HD) at 3,651 frames per second, 8 bits per pixel (16.7 million colors), and ISO 400, using a 24mm f/1.5 lens. As the frame rate was much higher than in the previous example, more lighting was needed. A single Godox SL300 III LED light was placed approximately 1m/3ft away from the subject.

Note: A very faint line, or difference between the upper and lower halves of the image on the LCD or HDMI output may be seen under specific lighting conditions. This does not appear in saved frames, and will be resolved in an incoming software update.

In both demonstration videos, assistive features built-in to the Chronos 4K12 were used to ensure that the subject was in focus, and exposed appropriately. After the recording was stopped, the Playback screen was accessed via the button in the lower right-hand corner:

The Playback screen enables review of the most recently recorded high-speed video, allowing a frame-by-frame seek as required. The table below describes each indicator or setting that is present in the Playback screen:

The top bar of the Playback screen shows the following indicators and functions:

Indicator / Function

Description

Mark Start: _______

Displays the currently selected start frame for playback and saving to internal or external storage.

Mark End: ________

Displays the currently selected end frame for playback and saving to internal or external storage.

Play Rate: ________

Controls the on-screen playback rate (in FPS).
This does not affect the frames that are saved to internal or external storage.

Files

Opens a file browser window.

Settings

Opens the save settings window, allowing for the destination device and folder to be selected.

The left and right edges of the Playback screen show the following functions:

Function

Description

Jump to Start

Sets the current frame to frame 1.

Mark Start

Sets the current frame as the first frame to be saved to internal or external storage.

Mark End

Sets the current frame as the last frame to be saved to internal or external storage.

Tap anywhere in the video display to show/hide functions and indicators.

The bottom bar of the Playback screen shows the following functions:

Function

Description

<- (Left Arrow)

Seek backwards through recorded frames.

-> (Right Arrow)

Seek forwards through recorded frames.

Play / Pause

Play the specified sequence of frames at the current Play Rate, beginning with the frame specified by Mark Start, and ending with the frame specified by Mark End.

The playback will loop indefinitely until paused.

Save

Save the range of frames specified by Mark Start and Mark End to the internal or external storage device as specified in Settings.

Open the navigation menu to exit back to the Main Screen, or to access additional settings.
